End of ChatGPT and Copilot on WhatsApp: What's Changing from 2026
If you regularly use ChatGPT or Copilot directly in WhatsApp, prepare for a major change. Meta, the parent company of the instant messaging app, updated its terms of use for professionals (WhatsApp Business Solution) at the end of October 2025. This revision prohibits general-purpose chatbots, like those from OpenAI and Microsoft. Starting January 15, 2026, these tools will no longer be accessible via WhatsApp.
This decision, reported by The Verge on November 26, marks a strategic shift for Meta. OpenAI and Microsoft have already confirmed the departure of their assistants from the platform, but they remain fully operational on their dedicated apps.
Why is Meta Ejecting Competing Chatbots?
The new WhatsApp terms specify that the Business Solution is not designed for generic chatbots. Although Meta explained this as a technical clarification, it's primarily a maneuver to promote Meta AI, its in-house AI assistant. Already visible via a blue circle in the app, Meta AI is the only chatbot to survive this purge.
This ban will also affect other tools like Perplexity, which was accessible on WhatsApp until now. With 2 billion users worldwide, the messaging app represents an ideal entry point for AI giants. In the race for artificial intelligence, Meta doesn't want to leave room for competition.
Fortunately, ChatGPT and Copilot aren't disappearing: you can still download them for free from the App Store, Google Play, or via the web. Advanced versions require a subscription, but basic access remains open.
What to Do Before the Deadline?
You have until January 15, 2026, to enjoy these integrations. If you have active conversations, consider exporting them or migrating to the official apps. Meta AI remains an option, but if you prefer independent alternatives, other messaging apps or direct AI applications will be available.
